Dooars are the foothills of Eastern Himalayas and basically means door. This region forms the gateway to Bhutan from India. Dooars is divided into two parts- Eastern Dooars and Western Dooars by the Sankosh River. The term dooars is synonymous with the term Terai and is the nitrate rich plain in India. The Dooars region comprises of the plains of Darjeeling Himalayas, the entire Jalpaiguri district and Alipurduar district. The altitude of this area ranges from 90 to 1750 m. The major river of this region is Teesta other then Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa, Dyna, Raidak and Kaljani Rivers.

  • • Dooars in summer season extends from the month of March to June and temperature ranges between 21 and 31 degree Celsius. Weather in Dooars is not too harsh and summer is probably not the best time to visit Dooars
  • • Dooars in monsoon season extends from July to September. If you want to avoid the crowd and enjoy the lush greenery, then this is the right season for you. The constant rain in this season makes it an idyllic season to visit.
  • • Dooars in winter season extends from October to February and is perhaps the best time to visit this place. The rainfall becomes scanty this season and the weather remains pleasant. Also winter is the best time to visit wildlife sanctuaries.

Chalsa :

It is a small town situated just on the foothills of Himalayas. Chalsa is surrounded by hills, tea gardens, rivers and forests. From the right side of this forest you can go to Lataguri via Gorumara National Park. One part of Chalsa is surrounded by Gorumara National Park whereas the other part is surrounded by Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary.

Lataguri :

It is a small town located in the Jalpaiguri district and is located outside the Gorumara National Park. It has become famous as the base to explore the Gorumara National Park. The quaint village of Lataguri also has “Nature Interpretation Centre” to gather information about the rich flora and fauna of Gorumara.

Gorumara National Park :

This national park is situated on the banks of the rivers Murti and Raidak in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. The forest is spread over an area of 80 sq km and has a variety of flora and fauna. You can spot several species such as Indian Wild dogs, Giant Squirrels, Wild boars, deer, cobra, python, woodpeckers and much more. It is famous for the Asiatic one-horned rhino.

Mongpong :

It is situated on the lofty bank of Teesta and gives panoramic views of the wide Teesta basin and the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. Monpong is situated in a very unique and romantic location.

Samsing:

It is a small hill village and a tourist spot in Maitali, Malbazar subdivision of Japaiguri district in West Bengal. It is endowed with pictorial landscape, lush green tea gardens, daunting hills and dense forest. It also the gateway to the famous Neora Valley National Park and is one of the richest biological zones in the whole of Northeast. Murti :

Murti is a place situated just beside the Murti River between the Chapramari forest and Gorumara National Park. Murti is famous for its enchanting scenic beauty. The river bank of Murti becomes a picnic spot during the winter season. When visiting Murti you can also visit some offbeat tourist places such as Jhalong, Bindu, Paren and Bindu.

Meteli :

It is located at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas and is a unique location between the meadows o lush tea gardens which offers the most pictorial views of the tea gardens. This place is known for its lush tea garden an old township at the Jalpaiguri district.

Lepchakha Village :

This village is nestled on the hilltop of Buxa tiger Reserve. Situated close to the Indo Bhutan border is a Drukpa village known as Lepchakha village. This place has been bestowed with surreal natural beauty due to its close proximity with Buxa National Park. Also it is located very close to Bhutan border, the distance being 2-3 kilometers.

Madarihat :

It is a small town located in Alipurduar district around 80 kilometers away from Jalapiguri. This town is situated at the vicinity of Jaldapara National Park which is famous for its Indian Rhinoceros.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary :

Chapramari is a continuation of the Gorumara National Park. The forest is small in size and is bounded by Murti River on the west and Jaldhaka on the east.
